Mammoths are ancient cousins of the modern elephant that became extinct about 11,000 years ago. Remains of mammoths have been found in Europe, Asia and North America — even in Idaho. They lived in cold climates, weighed about six to ten tons, had tusks up to nine feet long, and a thick fur coat with two layers. Scientists can tell the age of a mammoth by its tusks. A cross section of a tusk reveals growth rings, just like a tree.
