States of Matter: Guests

Dr. Kathryn Devine

Associate Professor of Physics, College of Idaho

I am originally from Rochester, Minnesota. As an undergraduate, I studied physics at Carleton College, a small liberal arts college in Minnesota. I went on to receive my Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. As part of my graduate studies, I spent two years working at the National Radio Astronomy's Very Large Array telescope in Socorro, New Mexico. For my graduate research I examined star-forming environments in infrared dark clouds (very dense concentrations of dust and gas in the Milky Way).

After I completed my graduate studies, I moved to Boise, Idaho to join the physics faculty at the College of Idaho. For fun, I enjoy many of the outdoor activities that Idaho has in abundance, including hiking, skiing, and climbing.

Dr. Christopher Saunders

Visiting Professor of Chemistry, College of Idaho

I grew up in small-town north Idaho. My interest in science started at an early age with my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Humble. She showed my class just how fun it can be to discover how the world around us works. I received my B.S. from The College of Idaho in 2002. It was during those undergraduate years that I started to develop an interest in teaching. I worked at Analytical Labs, Inc. in Boise for two years after graduating before starting my graduate studies. I received my Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Arkansas in 2011. My research focus was method development in the detection of methionine sulfoxide in proteomic samples.

After finishing my Ph.D., I moved back to the Treasure Valley. I taught at College of Western Idaho as an adjunct professor for a year. Since 2012 I have been a visiting professor at my alma mater, The College of Idaho, teaching a variety of general and upper division chemistry courses. I love every day that I get to interact with students. My continuing research interests revolve around science education. When I am not teaching, I love to cook, read, play board games, and spend time with friends and family.
