Mountain Goats: Activity - Hang On, Get A Grip

In this lesson, students will try and climb up a slide using various simulated feet.

Materials

  • Volleyball knee pads
  • Fur
  • Plastic
  • Sandpaper
  • Wool mittens
  • Grip gloves
  • Rubber gloves
  • Foam
  • Plastic forks (to attach to fingers of gloves)
  • Nylons
  • Plastic milk jugs

Objective

To demonstrate adaptations of specialization of feet for a specific habitat.

Procedure

  1. Students remove shoes. They place volleyball kneepads on their hands and knees.
  2. Place different materials over the kneepads.
  3. Students attempt to climb up the slide.
  4. Discuss which materials work best.
