AM
 - amplitude modulation - method of using radio waves by adjusting the amplitude or size of a wave
analog signal
 - radio waves containing both the picture and sound of a TV program; in an analog television broadcast, the brightness, colors and sound are represented by rapid variations in the amplitude, frequency or phase of the signal.
antenna
 - (plural - antennas) equipment for receiving radio waves

broadcasting company
 - a business that sends out signals using radio waves to entertain and provide information

C

cathode ray tube
 - (CRT) equipment that focuses a beam of light onto a phosphor screen
channel
 - frequency on which a television station airs programming
commercial
 - having to do with business - also an advertisement

data
 - facts and information
dialogue
 - speaking and talking
digital signal
 - TV signals encoded in a numeric series composed of 0’s and 1’s
direct line
 - without interruption or interference - a straight distance between objects

E

electromagnetic spectrum
 - the range of all visible and invisible light waves
electron
 - a negatively charged particle of electricity

fluid
 - smooth, without breaks
FM
 - frequency modulation - method of using radio waves by adjusting the frequency or number of waves per measurement of time
Foley artist
 - an artist that creates sound effects for motion

G

geostationary orbit
 - an orbit that keeps up with the turning of the earth so that it stays directly over the same location

 - business activity
intensity

LCD technology
 - “liquid crystal display” – a display where millions of pixels are switched on or off to make a picture, with liquid crystals acting as microscopic light switches
luxury
 - generally not a necessity

magnetic field
 - a field around a magnet and its influence
mechanical vibrations
 - continuous shaking with predictable frequency
migration
 - seasonal movement of animals
mobile
 - capable of being moved

neon
 - a gas that glows when exposed to electrons

 - a complex facility for broadcasting television

OLED technology
 - “organic light-emitting diodes” – bright light is produced by organic, carbon-based molecules and emitted by millions of pixels when an electrical current is switched on

 - an image that deceives reality

phosphor
 - any substance that, when exposed to electricity or other form of radiation, gives off a visible light
pixels
 - the smallest part of an image
plasma television
 - a flat screen that works using a plasma gas such as xenon or neon

 - the horizontal and vertical pattern made by a CRT gun which scans across and from top to bottom of a screen and then back again

 - (noun) a magnetic tape that allows for storing and copying visual actions; (verb) the act of creating these copies - filming

 - the distance from the crest of one wave to the crest of the next wave
